Nothing you say leaves your Mac.

Altypist turns your speech into text on the Mac itself. No server is involved, not ours and not anyone else's.

Check it yourself. Finish setup, turn Wi‑Fi off, and dictate. Try the switch.

Made for HIPAA-sensitive work. Audio and text are never sent outside your Mac. So there is no data processor, and no Business Associate Agreement to sign. Altypist is local software, not a HIPAA-covered entity. This describes how it is built. It is not a compliance certification.

Also recording meetings? Take both.

Altypist dictates — you speak, and the words appear where your cursor is. Altypist Memo records a conversation through your microphone or takes an audio file, transcribes it, separates the speakers and drafts a timecoded summary. Both run entirely on your Mac, and seats count Macs, not apps: both on one Mac use one seat. Already own one? The other is $30 $10.00.

Questions

Questions people ask before they buy.

Is it private enough for client data?

Your audio and text are never uploaded. The audio is not kept once it becomes text. Your IT or compliance team can read the Security & Architecture page before you buy.

What exactly goes over the network?

Four things, and none of them is your voice or your text:

  • the speech model, downloaded once during setup;
  • licence checks, only after you enter a key;
  • one anonymous install count, sent once, with no identifier;
  • checks for new versions.

There is no usage tracking and no account.

Does it keep a history of what I dictate?

No. There is no dictation history and no saved audio. Optional statistics keep only four numbers a day, such as word count. Text is pasted in, so it replaces what was on your clipboard.

Why not the built-in macOS Dictation?

Apple Dictation is free, and it also runs on your Mac for many languages. Altypist is for people who dictate a lot. You can add names and terms, and it types correctly on any keyboard layout. The full comparison.

Which Macs does it run on, and what does it need?

It needs a Mac with Apple Silicon (M1 or later) and macOS 15 or later. Intel Macs are not supported. It asks for two permissions: the microphone, and Accessibility to type into other apps.

Is it a subscription?

No. You pay once, and the licence does not expire. Updates within the major version are included. Dictation works offline. A licensed Mac re-checks its licence online now and then, and keeps working for up to 7 days without a check. To move to a new Mac, choose “Unlink this device” in Settings → Licensing.

What if it isn't right for me?

Start with the free 7 days — every feature, no card, no account. If you've already bought, you have 14 days to ask for a full refund, no reason required. Refund policy.
