Altypist transcribes speech entirely on your Mac. This page describes exactly what data exists, where it goes, and what we can and cannot see. It describes the software as built, not an aspiration.

The short version. Your audio and your transcripts never leave your Mac. We never receive them, so we cannot read, store, or hand them over. The only thing Altypist sends us is a licence key and a one-way hash of your Mac's hardware identifier, and only when you activate or check a licence.

1. What never leaves your device

Speech recognition and text formatting both run locally, on your Mac's Apple Neural Engine, using the open-source Whisper model and a local formatting model. As a result the following never reach us or any third party:

There is no analytics SDK, no crash reporter, no usage telemetry and no background synchronisation in the application.

2. What Altypist does send, and when

Altypist contacts a server in only three situations. Support, below, is you writing to us — the app does not send anything on your behalf.

Licence activation, validation and deactivation

When you enter a licence key, and periodically afterwards to confirm it is still valid, the app sends two values to our licence server:

ValueWhat it is
license_keyThe key you were issued when you bought Altypist.
instance_nameA SHA-256 hash of your Mac's hardware UUID. The raw UUID is never stored or transmitted, and the hash cannot be reversed back into it.

We store, against that key: the tier bought, how many device seats it includes, whether it is active or revoked, an optional internal note such as the order reference, and the creation time. For each activated device we store the hashed identifier and the time it was activated. That is the complete record.

We do not collect your email address, name, or any account details in the application. Altypist has no accounts and no sign-up.

Downloading the speech model on first launch

The first time you run Altypist it downloads the recognition model from Hugging Face. That is a normal file download from a third party, and it is the only moment Altypist needs an internet connection in order to work. Afterwards the model is cached locally and recognition runs offline.

Checking for updates

The app periodically fetches https://altypist.com/appcast.xml to see whether a newer version exists. This is a plain file request; it carries no identifier of you or your machine beyond what any web request carries.

If you contact support

Support is by email. Writing to support@altypist.com means we hold your message and your email address for as long as needed to help you.

3. Server logs and infrastructure

Our licence server runs on Cloudflare Workers with a Cloudflare D1 database. Like any web service, requests to it involve your IP address at the network level, and Cloudflare processes it as our infrastructure provider. We do not use IP addresses to build a profile of you and we do not join them to your licence record.

The marketing site sets no cookies at all — no advertising, no analytics, and no preference storage. Each language is its own address, so there is nothing to remember about you between visits.

4. Payments

Altypist is sold as a one-time purchase or a monthly subscription. Either way, payment is handled by a third-party payment provider, which receives whatever it needs to process the transaction, such as your card details and billing country. We never receive or store your card number. We receive confirmation that a payment succeeded, so that we can issue your key, and the email address you gave the provider so that we can send the key to you.

5. The trial

The 7-day trial requires no card and no account. Its countdown is kept locally on your Mac, in your user preferences and in the macOS Keychain. Nothing about your trial is reported to us.

6. Retention

7. Your requests

Write to privacy@altypist.com to ask what we hold about a licence, to correct it, or to have it deleted. Because we hold so little, most such requests are answered in a sentence. Deleting a licence record also deactivates the licence, so we will confirm before doing it.

8. Children

Altypist is a professional tool and is not directed at children under 13.

9. Changes

If this policy changes we will update the date at the top of this page. If a change ever affects what we collect, we will say so on the site rather than only here.

10. Contact
